This was absolute HELL of an alteration as the belt kept getting in the way of machining the zipper, whilst the extra fabric from the zip tape made it extremely difficult to pass the needle through when closing. I spent time last year hunting down YKK continuous zip tape & fittings to custom a length, which involved carefully removing teeth from the tape. Then I removed the tail sheath, whip stitched…

  • Throwback! Miwaks’ bonetail weighs in at 2kg but thanks to the lumbar belt feels relatively light and has a lovely bounce.

  • Made up a 1:1 replica of the belt end of Miwak’s bonetail for my bodysuit maker. I am now considering adding 2 more segments but carving it ragged to look like an injury – but that’s a 2023 project.

  • Miwak’s tail is complete! Final weigh in is 2.3kg but it doesn’t feel like it when worn.

  • Attaching the lumbar belt involved layering the endcap, sewing down the top webbing to the endcap, sewing the belt to the endcap, then handsewing the bottom webbing to the top webbing internally. A test fit revealed the tail is sitting too high and the belt stitching is too wide causing pulling where my body curves.…

  • Homeward stretch of the bonetail. The last 2 sections have to be completed separately as I need to reinforce them in the machine before connecting to the main sleeve. Here you can see the side seam to close, and pins marking a shaping dart to be sew into each spine.
