The cowl I am knitting I am doing in double knit. Although the colourwork portion is very easily done in double knit, the twisted rib has proven a massive challenge as regular cast on/bind off of this stitch is vastly different in double knitting – in fact, a bind off for a twisted rib in double knitting doesn’t exist! I’ve got a lot of help from my online fibre community to address the challenges with this project.

I have never had any problems with fibre or fabric storage my entire life.

I think the main consideration for storing any kind of textiles is making sure the storage area is dry, cool, & has good ventilation. All my fabric & fibre is kept in ip67 waterproof containers, some in my house in the craft room, some downstairs in the garage. The fibre boxes I go a little bit extra and bag everything in resealable baggies – here’s what I organised today ready for storage.

It’s also very possible the my local Aussie eastern seaboard climate helps a lot too!

Picked a ‘simple’ shawl pattern using chunky yarn to practice making a shawl before I try with my handspun. Only, this pattern isn’t simple at all! I’ve finished the lace edge, but now I have to teach myself short rows to finish the piece. The white yarn are lifelines I wove in at points where I was terrified I was going to screw up the pattern.

This is the finished rectangular shawl I made for the 2024 Royal Easter Show competition. Honestly, the colours are not represented well in photos at all! This is made using my ‘sunburnt country’ handspun spun which is marled 2ply yarn burnt orange/yellow/red plyed with a teal blue/green. I intentionally made the shawl longer so that it can be worn either as a long scarf, or wrapped over the shoulder/s.

Last pair of pants I’ll need for a while, mostly complete apart from the hems. In the middle of sewing these I realised that I was accidentally sewing up the Second Doctors pants (Patrick Troughton’s Doctor in Doctor Who actually wore yellow check pants, just no one knew until we got the animated/colourised episodes).

‘Star Dreams’ windstone pyo gryphon. This piece is based on the Australian female red tailed black cockatoo. Only the females of this bird species have this beautiful yellow to red gradient & the dusting of yellow spots/stripes on their feathers.

This one is staying with me. But I will always consider commission requests for windstone pyos based off birds.

I noticed that the Royal Easter Show had a category for an item made completely from handspun. So I did something crazy & spent December/Jan crocheting up the shawl my ‘Sunburnt Country’ handspun was destined for to enter the category.

Regardless of how successful this piece will be in the competition, this shawl came out more beautiful than I imagined when I was designing the yarn.
